Serotonergic dysfunction and aggression control

چکیده

In the early seventies we reported the occurrence of diminished post-probenecid accumulation of 5hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in depression (van Praag el al. 1970; van Praag & Korf, 1971). Lowered baseline and post-probenecid 5-HIAA levels in CSF are an indication of diminished metabolism of the mother amine serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5HT) in the CNS. Low CSF 5-HIAA appeared not to be related to a particular syndromal depression type, though the phenomenon occurred more frequently in vital (endogenous, melancholic) depression than in personal (neurotic, dysthymic) depression (van Praag et al. 1965); more frequently in severe than in mild depression, and more frequently in psychotic than in non-psychotic depression.

Association of aggressive behavior with altered serotonergic function in patients who are not suicidal.

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine whether aggression and serotonergic dysfunction are related in the absence of a history of suicidal behavior. Although serotonergic dysfunction has been implicated in aggressive and impulsive behavior, most studies of such behavior have included individuals with a history of suicide attempts. Low concentrations of CSF 5-hydroxyindoleacetic ac...

Differential serotonergic modulation of two types of aggression in weakly electric fish

Agonistic aggression has provided an excellent framework to study how conserved circuits and neurochemical mediators control species-specific and context-dependent behavior. The principal inhibitory control upon aggression is serotonin (5-HT) dependent, and the activation of 5-HT(1A) receptors is involved in its action. To address whether the serotonergic system differentially regulates differe...

Serotonergic function, two-mode models of self-regulation, and vulnerability to depression: what depression has in common with impulsive aggression.

Evidence from diverse literatures supports the viewpoint that two modes of self-regulation exist, a lower-order system that responds quickly to associative cues of the moment and a higher-order system that responds more reflectively and planfully; that low serotonergic function is linked to relative dominance of the lower-order system; that how dominance of the lower-order system is manifested ...

Single Serotonergic Neurons that Modulate Aggression in Drosophila

Monoamine serotonin (5HT) has been linked to aggression for many years across species. However, elaboration of the neurochemical pathways that govern aggression has proven difficult because monoaminergic neurons also regulate other behaviors. There are approximately 100 serotonergic neurons in the Drosophila nervous system, and they influence sleep, circadian rhythms, memory, and courtship. In ...

5-HT1B receptors and aggression: a review.

The serotonergic (5-HT) system in the brain is involved in the modulation of offensive aggressive behavior. The dogma that activity of the 5-HT system is inversely related to aggression is obsolete now. Research on the status of the 5-HT system before, during and after the execution of aggression is ongoing but has not yet led to a clear picture about the actual functional role of the 5-HT syst...

Two-Mode Models and Serotonin Function

The serotonin system is a collection of neural pathways whose overall level of functioning (from low to high) relates to diverse kinds of psychological and behavioral variability. Individual differences in serotonergic function are important both in personality and in vulnerability to psychological disorders. These disorders range widely—from impulsive aggression to depression. One way to under...
